Suspect arrested in theft of Miss Washington's crown, gowns

Deputies have arrested a man suspected of stealing a number of items from the reigning Miss Washington's SUV, including a crown, sashes, pageant gowns, credit cards, an iPad and personal items.

The suspect, Jayson Broderson-Matthai, 32, of Renton, was identified following an investigation by Pierce County Sheriff's detectives, said spokesman Ed Troyer.

Broderson-Matthai also is suspected of stealing a Tacoma firefighter's jacket from another vehicle.

The thefts took place on Feb. 28, when a silver SUV belonging to Brittney Henry, the current Miss Washington, was stolen from outside a home in Edgewood.

The 24-year-old beauty queen said she wanted to be ready for an early morning charity event, so she packed her car the night before the event.

"It was kind of like I'm being extra responsible tonight, so I'm not in a frenzy in the morning," she said.

But the car was missing when she walked outside the next morning.

SeattlePI: 6 indicted in gun trafficking probe

SeattlePI.com - Six Seattle-area men have been indicted on firearms crimes following an undercover investigation targeting gun traffickers in the region.

Federal agents claim to have seized 25 guns during the investigation, which saw four convicted felons and two other men arrested earlier this week on allegations that they were illegally dealing or possessing guns.

Federal prosecutors in Seattle contend the weapons were sold to an informant over several months earlier this year. Five of the defendants are charged with conspiracy to unlawfully deal firearms, and unlawfully dealing in firearms.

"The defendants trafficked all kinds of firearms, including semi-automatic assault rifles, sawed-off shotguns, handguns and even a silencer," U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan said in a statement. "Convicted felons illegally selling this kind of firepower is a dangerous combination."

Police increasing DUI patrols for holiday weekend

Police increasing DUI patrols for holiday weekend

For this weekend’s holiday, police are going “bar hopping.”

“As part of the statewide Target Zero Teams initiative, police officers from Auburn, Federal Way, Kent and Renton regularly participate in weekly DUI emphasis patrols,” said Kent Police Traffic Sergeant Robert Constant.

“On April 7, we will be adding the extra step of educating bar owners, managers, and servers that they have a responsibility too. Do not over-serve customers and if there are customers over the limit, help them get a safe ride home; a taxi, a bus, or have a sober ride pick them up.”

The multi-agency bar program is funded by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission and is part of an ongoing partnership between law enforcement, public health, and the community to reach the Washington State Target Zero goal of eliminating all fatal and serious injury crashes by 2030, according to the Kent Police Department.

Federal Way youth group leader charged with molesting teen

SeattlePI.com is reporting a 25-year-old youth group leader from Federal Way has been charged with engaging in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl he met while volunteering at a Des Moines church.

From the PI:

The girl’s mother contacted authorities in December, and subsequently turned over writing and other items indicating [Brandon] Majszak had been having sexual contact with the child.

Charging Majszak with child molestation, prosecutors contend he used his position with the church to abuse the girl.

Writing to the court, a King County Sheriff’s Office detective asserted the girl admitted to having sexual contact with Majszak on two occasions at a Seattle home where Majszak was house sitting.

Is there a gang problem in your community?

A local community council wants to know what you think about gang activity in your community.

The Suburban King County Coordinating Council on Gangs is a partnership between the Center for Children and Youth Justice and high-level decision makers from across South King County and Bellevue that is focused on creating a coordinated and collaborative response to gang violence.

To better assess the gang problem in the Auburn, Bellevue, Federal Way, Highline, Kent, Renton, and Tukwila school districts, the council has created an online community survey. Anyone living or working in these districts is welcome to participate.

Here is more information from the council:

The goal of the Council is to create a comprehensive plan that brings together efforts in prevention, intervention, suppression and re-entry. The planning process begins with, and is driven by, a thorough community assessment designed to identify the nature and scope of gang activity and youth violence in King County’s suburban communities.

No picture of a community’s gang crime problem is complete without the views of community residents. The attached survey gives respondents an opportunity to share their own experience or beliefs about gangs and gang activity in their community. Answers to the following questions will be sought:

  • Do community residents believe a gang problem exists in the community? If so, what is the problem?
  • Are there significant differences across respondent groups? What are those differences?
  • Do parents believe their children to be involved in gangs or at risk for gang involvement?
  • What do the respondents think should be done about the gang problem?
  • In what ways are the respondents willing to respond to the gang problem?

Surveillance images show thieves who targeted beauty queen

Pierce County Sheriff's detectives are hoping newly-surveillance images will help them track down the thieves who stole from the Tacoma Fire Department and the reigning Miss Washington.

Police say on the night of Feb. 28 the thieves prowled a Tacoma firefighter's car in Edgewood, stealing a red and black Tacoma Fire coat, a gold necklace and a number of other personal items.

On the same night, the thieves stole a silver SUV that belonged to the reigning Miss Washington, 24-year-old Brittney Henry. Inside the vehicle was Henry's Miss Washington crown, four pageant dresses and two sashes.

The SUV turned up hours later at a motel in Puyallup, but Henry's personal items, including credit cards and an iPad, were nowhere to be found.

Police caught a break in the case when they got a hold of surveillance images showing the thieves using Henry's credit cards at an ATM, a Lowes and a WalMart in Federal Way.

One of the men was also wearing the stolen Tacoma Fire coat.
