A man was fatally wounded in an officer-involved shooting late Tuesday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Cathy Schrock said the the man was shot near S. 360th St. and Enchanted Pkwy S. at approximately 5:10 p.m.

Investigators responded to a report of a stolen truck, which was believed to be parked outside a nearby Wal-Mart store. Officers located the 1989 Ford F250 in the parking lot, and noted someone had switched out the original license plate.

While they were on the scene, officers saw a man come out of the store, get into the truck and drive off. They tried to pull the driver over for investigation, but the driver refused and led them on a low-speed chase for less than a mile.

The officers attempted a PIT maneuver, but failed. The second attempt proved successful, however, and caused the driver to veer off the road and crash into a fence.

When an officer tried to approached the driver in his car, the truck backed up toward the officer, prompting him to open fire.

The officers fired off multiple rounds, hitting the man.

The 23-year-old Tacoma man was taken to Harborview Medical Center with serious injuries. He was pronounced dead several hours later.

The officer involved in the shooting is said to be a seven-year veteran of the force. He has been placed on paid administrative leave as is standard in such cases.

The King County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation.
