Police release sketch of gunman in road rage incident | 911
Investigators have released a sketch of the gunman involved in the road rage shooting incident last week.
Detectives believe the shooter is a Hispanic man between 20 and 30 years old. He is believed to have been driving a black luxury-type sedan at the time of the incident.
The shooting happened in the middle of the day, on a busy road on Jan. 2.
Joshua Deraitus, 30, had just pulled out of a parking lot onto Military Road near South 288th Street when trouble began.
Deraitus admits he cut off a fast-approaching car by mistake, and when that driver starting tailgating him, he stayed in the left lane, preventing that driver from passing.
All of that apparently sent the other driver into a fit of road rage.
As the victim starts on a long road to recovery and his family helps him through the tough times ahead, they're anxious to find the man who opened fire.
The man in that car pulled up alongside Deraitus' pickup truck, and did the unthinkable.
"Fired one shot through the passenger side window, striking our son in his left eye," said the victim's father, Peter Deraitus.
The victim lost that eye, and his nose was shattered. The bullet was left lodged on the side of his face.
After two rounds of surgery, and so many more to come, he is now at home, recovering. But his family is desperate to find the man who caused so much heartbreak.
"I always thought I could keep my boys safe. And it's gone," said mother, Karen Deraitus.
"He gets through this mentally - that's going to be the challenge," said his father.
Police said they don't have much information to go on, and have asked any witnesses to contact them.
Anyone with information on the case is urged to call police immediately.
